Zero to $500 in a few hours
How many times have you seen statements like that in your email from some affiliate marketer who is more interested in getting you into their email list then they are in actually teaching you something. Common sense lets us believe that if something is to good to be true, then it probably is. I subscribe to that belief and I think that's the way most of us approach the offers that we get sent to our email address.
It just so happened that today I received the same subject line that I labeled this post with, "[LIVE DEMO] Zero to $500 in a Week'. Believe me I knew when I opened it that I wouldn't be buying whatever it is that they are selling, no chance no how. However that didn't stop me from opening the email and reading it, it also didn't stop me from ....
Clicking on the darn link that they included in the email. So to me, the person that wrote this email has already been successful to some degree. I may not have purchased the product that they were pushing, but it's not what I didn't buy that makes this email a success. What makes it a success, is that I choose to not unsubscribe to this newsletter, and I did click on the link in the email to see whether or not I "might" be interested in the offering.
So this got me thinking a bit about where the real potential actually resides when it comes to online marketing. Having a list of potential "Clickers" is always a key component. Establishing yourself as a trusted advisor is the ultimate goal as the marketing person. If the people that subscribe to your content trust you, and you can prove to not be untrustworthy, then you have a greater chance of turning them into a paying customer, rather than a voyeur.
It also occurred to me that the real conversations are already happening on the web, and if you aren't a part of them you might as well look for another place to make money. So I now move into my next phase of 2011 transformation and that is to get involved in the online conversations happening around affiliate marketing. As much as I want to play with the big boys in this field, I also want to go into this area with some ethics.
I think it's ashame that someone is promoting the idea of making $500 in an hour when they know darn well that the likelihood of that happening for someone doubtful. So again I will use this blog to dissect the teachings of others and put them to practical use to see if they do actually generate income. Think of me as the consumer advocate for affiliate products, if it works I'll know about it, if it doesn't you'll know about it.
One question I would really like to have answered is "If they are making so much money with a particular technique, why do they want to share this?". I've always wondered what the answer to that is, so now is the time to set the record straight.
