Cloning Isn't So Bad

There never seems to be a shortage of cloning news, either on TV or on the Internet, and as I write this post (late at night), I'm starting to wonder if it's really that bad after all. Today was one of those exciting days, one of the days that I enjoy the most. Today I got to meet a new client, and the best part about it was that this new client came to me as from a reference. That's right, good work has finally paid off and now other clients are passing my name along to their friends and associates.

Getting new jobs by way of referral is great, but remember, there is added pressure when taking one of these opportunities. The person that referred you has put their reputation on the line for you, and you surely don't want to disappoint them either. However the real point of this wasn't about making sure you do a good job for each client, the point was how I felt as I was driving away from this client.

While it's always great to be busy, we should all hope for that, I sometimes find it difficult to not think about all the other things I have going on once I leave a customers location. I often wish there were two of me. One of me to generate new business, and a second me to actually run the day to day operation. I can't be visiting a potential new client while working an existing project.

However, I have found a somewhat band aided approach to fixing this problem. Set time aside in the morning, and the afternoon to catch up with clients that you currently aren't working with. With that said, having my handy Palm Pre with me, accelerated that amount of contact I can have with a client before I actually need to pick up the phone. Technology is a wonderful thing when it actually works.

I've also found that the more organized I am, the more I can accomplish in a day. The more I accomplish today, means more fresh things for tomorrow, which is always nice. I'm not one of those people that likes to wait until the last minute, I get to nervous and I know there is always going to be some sort of problem. So I simply don't do it.

I've also begun to hand some of my daily tasks off to others. Ok, to my wife and she's part of the package and don't get paid really well. Which reminds me. Even though I'm trying really hard to provide a great life for my family and getting the ball rolling with this business, it's important to recognize the effort others are with you every step of the way. Honey I know your not reading this, but that is for you. Back to handing things off, such as running to the office supply store, making decisions on the colors of promotional materials, sending snail mail out, etc... Those are things I thought I had to handle all the time, not anymore, my time is better spent pounding the phones.

So in essence, I wish there were a way to clone myself, but there isn't. So I'm going to have to learn how to be more productive and not let the day to day monotonous task become too overwhelming. Everything can be good in moderation, even those things that never seem to go away, like paying bills.
