The ABC of Business

Ok, so I missed a day. Guess that means I’ll either need to double up today, or put something up really profound. I’ll go with doubling up; it seems to be the safest route to success and less embarrassment. Yesterday, I didn’t actually make a sale, or should I say I didn’t cash a check or receive any money. Instead I concentrated on generating a bigger pay off and lining up some work so that I would receive a check. There are two aspects to running a business and the juggling act between the two can be tricky. The majority of my time, while not at my day job or spending time with my family, is focused on money making activities. These activities can be broken down into two categories:

  1. Creating finished goods
  2. Lining up potentially new business
Here is one thing I know. If my website, printing press or embroidery machines aren’t being used, they are costing me something. The idea is to always have the machines running. I’d much rather have my machines in use than sitting idle. A machine sitting idle can’t make me any money.

Never having down time is a dream scenario. In fact, if that were the case I probably wouldn’t be typing this blog, because I’d be too busy trying to keep up with business. Currently I couldn’t tell you that my machines are in constant use. I use them often, actually daily, but I’m not so busy that I can’t manage my time. During those periods where I’m not actually printing, like right now, my attention needs to be focused on sales. That’s right, good old fashion sales. There is a great line from the movie “Glen Gary, Glenn Ross” where Alex Baldwin character says: “A.B.C, Always Be Closing”. It’s a great movie, and that line can be applied to so many aspects of business.

I’ve taken my time to now focus on reaching out to customers when I don’t have something to create or sell. My goal is to start booking time for my machines. I also think that a little advertising is a good thing. Where I live little league baseball season is starting up, and that means team moms will need to send their jerseys out to get lettered. My town only has one place to go for this type of thing and it isn’t me. We need to change that this year. I’m spending a fair amount of time creating a flyer to let people know I can do that for them.

As you can see, just because no money came in, doesn’t mean I’m not making money. It would be great to have money fall in my pocket daily, but that isn’t realistic. I’m happy with doing activities that will eventually lead to money showing up at my doorstep.
