Your Mother Was Right

Remember all those little sayings that our moms had for us every time we left the house? If you haven't heard a joke or two about wearing clean underwear, then you really need to get out more. Every comedian has used that once or twice in their career. Of all the anecdotes my mother had, my favorite was "Remember your please and thank yous". I still remember my mom saying that, and I'm sure I've even used it with my own children. But you know what? Mom was giving us not only great social advice, but good business advice too.

There is one thing that I want to do for all of my customers that seems a lot of other businesses don't do. I want to show the customer how much I really do appreciate them allowing me to gain their trust and business.

About this time last year, I purchased a system that will allow me to send greeting cards to anyone in the world for the less than half the price I would buy them for in the store. That's not all, these were real cards that come in the mail, to which I could completely customize. The beauty of it all was that all I did was type on a keyboard and someone else printed, stuffed and stamped the card and put it into the mail.

The reason for this post isn't the card system, it's the connection with the customer and allowing them to feel good about their decision to purchase a product through me. If you have a website, or you sell a service, you need to send thank you cards. Emails can get deleted with a click of a button, or worse yet, trapped in a spam filter. Thank You cards are typically always opened up and most are displayed in some form or fashion.

I can't report that I've had any immediate success with the cards I've sent (it's only been 4 days), but in time I feel it's a good investment. I figure since it includes my signature in the card and I can also put my web address and phone number, so they are bound to remember me the next time they want to make a purchase.

Remember, in business, especially in this economy, it's the little things that count. A thank you can go a long way.
