Happy New Year
The new year has finally made it here and its time to hit the ground running. For me that means starting to exhaust every possible avenue into making more money.
Yesterday I put things on eBay, and today I'll continue to add more, but there is also another area of expertise that I have, and that's creating and maintaining websites for companies. Just about anyone can create a website, that part isn't hard, what I offer is not only the creation of the website, but also creating a custom CMS that goes along with it.
Some are probably asking what a CMS is, and that's actually a pretty good questions. The most simple answer to that question is that it's the product that maintains and stores the content that you either write or extract from some other form, that goes on your website. It can either be a digital asset, such as an image or written document such as this post. So, I create those systems as a way for clients to maintain their own website and only have to call me in when needed.
So that sounds cool and everything, and you'd think that I'd be able to sustain my own business with that kind of work alone, but nobody knows I do it. That's right, I've never marketed myself, nor the business, so it really hasn't taken off. Since we are now in a new year, and I'm determined to create something for myself, I've decided that this avenue of revenue must be pursued. The only question, is how do I get the word out and how to I set it up.
Here is a simple checklist that I've come up with that I think I'll start with to get going
- Get a cool name for the business - Complete!
- Setup a website with screen shots and offerings - Not Complete
- Start filing out profiles on job sites explaining what I can do. (After website is finished for obvious reasons) - Not Complete
- Advertise locally - Not Complete
- Build an impressive portfolio - Not Complete
That should give me a good starting point. At least getting a website up and running will give me a place to hang my hat and experiment with before things really take off. The goal of today, along with something college football bowl games, is to create an information type of website where visitors can go and read more about the things I can do. More importantly it can give me that professional image and let people know I'm in business to help their business. From there I can add the company to my profile on various social networking sites and hopefully generate a few leads from that.
That should do it for today, I've got plenty of work ahead of me.
