1 Month Down 11 More To Go
January is over with and now February is upon us. I'll be posting my January numbers shortly, but before we dissect them, I think it's important to start February off right. Most businesses have a full month under their belts now and they should have a firm grasp on what they are going to need for at least the first part of the year.
For me the beginning of the month has the potential to bring about big changes. I'm not talking about the kind of changes that I necessary get to dictate. My current employer has announced that they will be letting go about 450 employees this month with their last being April. That should pretty much destroy moral and make for a very unpleasant working environment for those of us who might be lucky enough to keep our jobs.
Sometimes I wonder if the people keeping their job are really the lucky ones. We'll have to do the same amount of work with less resources and endure the thought that another wave of layoffs could be right around the corner. Let's face it, the economy sucks right now, and the security of working for a large company with a 401K, pension plan and health benefits are quickly starting to diminish. With a family those things are all important, but I believe in choosing my own destiny. Having to go through the worry of whether or not I'll have a job each and every quarter is really a pain. That's why I've started getting my own gigs to where I can rely on myself to make money and not worry about the 9 to 5 grind.
Looking at the amount of work I was able to do in January on the side, it's pretty encouraging to know that it's possible. There is definitely a strong possibility that I could depend on this side income if things got really bad. But lets not worry about what could happen, lets look to what I am going to MAKE happen.
This month I've decided that I want to match exactly what I did in the first month of this. Although those numbers are still getting put together, I'm confident that they were fairly good. I was able to pay the bills and pull out some cash, so it's got to be good. I also have a vacation planned so I won't be able to do business for 7 days.
Going into the month I worked hard to make sure I had booked enough work. I worked on getting orders in a position to be worked on so that I could start realizing some of the income at the beginning of the month. There is nothing like starting the month off strong and ending it stronger so that the month that follows it is in a good position. So we are off to a good start there, hopefully we'll be able to bring in 5 more new customers, which I was able to do in Jan.
Tomorrow I will post my final numbers, and I'm hoping they will be pretty good. I'm not expecting anything spectacular for the first month, but that means we can only go up from there.
