Fire your Boss!

2010 FAIL, 2011 WIN

As the posts on this site will show you, I didn't achieve a lot of the goals I set out to accomplish in 2010. In all the year wasn't a total waste. I did make some money outside of my current 9 - 5 job and I did establish key relationships, however I wasn't able to completely replace that income. The goal was always to be on my own running a business that I could not only make more money at, but spend more time with my family.

So here is to giving it another shot! This is what I'm going to do in 2011 to continue the dream of quiting my job and running on my own.

I truly believe that one thing I did this year that helped me live better and put in my hours, was getting physically and mentally healthy. You read that right, one of the things I did last year was change my diet and exercise more. The really odd thing about exercise, is that I usually found that time to be a time when I would actually have some of my best ideas. Either on the bike, treadmill or elliptical machine I usually had some very "inventive" ideas. Getting more exercise meant that I also needed to change the things that I was eating. This then lead to better sleep and more energy during the day. If you are struggling to keep your energy level up during the long hours of winter, might I suggest getting some exercise and making your meals a little more colorful. So I'm going to continue watching what I eat and making sure I get some good exercise.

Tracking my profits and loss has always been a hard thing for me to do. It's like not really wanting to know whether or not you making progress or going backwards. Most of the time if you're not tracking what you are doing you are most likely going backwards. I on the other hand was treading water, which is just like losing because I was spending energy that could have been applied other places. 2011 will bring tighter scrutiny to my expenses and incomes. This also means that I'd like to become much more effective at advertising online. Tracking what I do online is a really big step for me. In the past I've said that I'd "blog about everything", which as you can see by looking at the archives, didn't really happen. So now I've decided to "do what I can" and "post what I want". I figure that keeps me safe from those emails that start with "So.... What happened".

My biggest goal for the year is to amass $50K in pure profit by the end of the year. If you break that down by number of days in the year that brings us to about $137 a day. That's a lofty goal, but it can happen if I pay close attention to the numbers and make sure I cut my losses early, instead of trying to stick with something or improve something that is obviously failing. Knowing when to walk away has been a problem for me in the past, which I don't intend to repeat this year.

That's about it for 2011, as you can see I haven't set my goals too high, nor have I set them too low. I fully expect this coming year to be exciting, and rich with new opportunity.
