Tools That I Use
I got an email from someone reading along, and they wanted to know the "Tools" that I use to create my eBooks. That's a pretty good question because I actually use two different tools. First let me start by saying, the tools I use are dictated by the place that I'm currently working from.
There are many times that I work from the local coffee house, and there are times when I'm working in my home office. If I'm working from my home office, I use my PC and I use a word processor called Open Office. I like OpenOffice because it's FREE and it seems to have all the same capabilities that Microsoft Word has, with the added bonus of pdf generation. If I'm working from a coffee house or some other remote location, I'm usually on my laptop and using my MacBook. On my MacBook, I use Microsoft Word, which is an older version, but gets the job done.
I don't want to mislead you into thinking OpenOffice doesn't work with the Mac, because it does, I just choose to use software that I purchased instead of something that's free. If I had not purchased Word, I probably would have stayed with OpenOffice on my Mac as well, but I want to get as much as I can out of my investment.
When I do the final compilation of the document, I use OpenOffice and not Word, because OpenOffice can generate a pdf automatically. With Word I would have to buy the Adobe software to create the pdf, and I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible. However, to truly create a pdf that's locked down and prevents others from stealing your content, buying the Adobe software is important. If you want to learn more about pdf, head on over to PlanetPDF to find out more. We'll cover this format in more detail later.
So those are the tools that I use to create my content. Pretty straight forward and really painless to install. I'm sure there are other software titles out there that are just as good, but these are the two that I'm the most comfortable with, so I stick to them. If there are others out there that folks like to use, I would like to hear about them.
